As part of my process, I often paint and smear my work in an effort to stop my paintings from becoming boring. I like to use non traditional tools, palette knives, kitchen knives, window cleaners… In a lot of ways this textural approach enriches my work. I love the added oomph it gives my pieces.
For this project, I was asked to create a sense of place that was important to me. I chose Achill Island, Co. Mayo, Ireland. That island is the home to so many memories for me, mostly of camping with my family, playing on the beach or surfing those amazing waves and, of course, our spectacular weather.
This is a fairly symbolic piece for me, but at the same time, it’s not for me to overexplain a piece of work. Whatever you bring to it, perhaps that is what it could me to you, for your sense of place.
If you enjoy my daily paintings, you can see the full set, as I post, day by day, on Tumblr!
